Each AP Calculus AB/BC Free Response question is scored on a 9-point rubric that doesn’t just look at whether the final answer is right or wrong — it awards points separately for: correct setup, correct computation, units (in context-based questions), and complete calculus justification citing the correct theorem or principle. The most common way marks are lost is calculating correctly but not writing the supporting justification, or writing a justification without verifying the necessary conditions before using that theorem.

What the rubric actually scores

| Computation | Calculation continuing from a correct setup; even if setup is wrong, consistent computation from that setup can still earn partial credit |

| Justification | Must cite the correct theorem/principle by name, and verify the necessary conditions before applying it |
The theorems that need to be named correctly most often
- First Derivative Test — used to find relative maxima/minima, must state that f'(x) changes sign from positive to negative (or vice versa) at that point
- Second Derivative Test — used to check concavity, must clearly state the value of f”(x) at that point
- Intermediate Value Theorem (IVT) — used to prove a value c exists in a given interval, must state that the function is continuous on that interval and that the values at both endpoints span the target value
- Mean Value Theorem (MVT) — must state that the function is continuous on the closed interval and differentiable on the open interval before concluding there exists a value c where f'(c) equals the average rate of change
Example: incomplete vs complete justification
This example was written to illustrate the format of a justification, not a real exam question.
Incomplete: “f'(2) changes from positive to negative, so x=2 is a maximum” — the answer is correct, but doesn’t name the theorem (First Derivative Test), which may mean the examiner doesn’t award full credit for the justification component.
Complete: “By the First Derivative Test, since f'(x) changes sign from positive to negative at x=2, f has a relative maximum at x=2” — names the theorem and states the condition fully, earning full credit for the justification component.
Pre-submission checklist for FRQ answers
- For every question that requires justification, always name the theorem/principle being used — don’t just state the conclusion
- Verify the necessary conditions before applying a theorem (e.g. continuity, differentiability) — don’t skip this step
- Include units whenever the question has a real-world context (distance, rate of flow, etc.)
- Even if the setup is wrong, keep computing consistently from that setup — it’s still worth partial credit, better than stopping
