How universities view it — especially for engineering
Many top engineering universities (particularly in the UK and Europe) tend to state or recommend AA HL more explicitly than AI HL, because AA’s content builds the deep calculus and algebra foundation that first-year engineering core modules rely on directly. Choosing AI HL and then applying to a highly competitive engineering programme may mean needing to demonstrate especially strong foundational maths grades to compensate.
Important caveat: actual requirements vary by university and by course. Always check the entry requirements page of each university you’re interested in directly — don’t assume based on general articles alone, especially for highly competitive courses like engineering or maths at Russell Group-level (or equivalent) universities.
