Word problems in both primary maths and English don’t just test calculation skill or vocabulary — they test reading comprehension combined with problem-solving. A child who’s strong at calculation but weak at reading comprehension often gets word problems wrong because they choose the wrong operation, not because they can’t calculate.
Why word problems are harder than direct calculation
A word problem forces a child to do several things at once: read and comprehend, hold details in working memory, work out what’s actually being asked, choose the right operation, calculate, and explain the answer. Each of those steps has its own failure point — not just the calculation step.
Bar Model: the tool that bridges reading and calculation
The Bar Model (or Singapore Model Method) draws rectangular bars to represent the quantities in a problem, helping children visualise the relationship between numbers before calculating — instead of trying to calculate directly from the wording of the problem, which often leads to choosing the wrong operation. It’s usually introduced from Year 2, with deeper teaching in Years 3–4 to build up to unpacking more complex word problems.
Watch out: keywords in a problem can mislead
Many children are taught to spot “keywords” — see “more than” and rush to add, see “less than” and rush to subtract. But this method can be misleading. For example: “A has 5 more items than B. If A has 12, how many does B have?” — the word “more” here actually requires subtraction, not addition, because the question asks for the smaller value B. Children should be taught to understand the actual relationship between the numbers in a problem, not memorise keywords by rote.
